Way back in 1707, the first hospital in Calcutta was built in the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Council of Fort William constructed this hospital. This hospital, initially built for the Europeans, was then known as Presidency Hospital. The hospital was accommodated in a single storied building. Later, in 1768, two houses were purchased in Lower Circular Road for converting them into a full fledged hospital. Located near the Presidency Jail, the hospital came to be known as Presidency General Hospital. Doors were opened to the non-European patients from 2nd April 1770. The Presidency General Hospital was best known as PG Hospital till 1954 when it was named in the Independent India, as Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital. The naming was done to commemorate the name of the great donor Sukhlal Karnani. People started addressing the Hospital as SSKM Hospital.
From 16th January 1957, the hospital came to be known as The Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER). The institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, on 16th January 1957. Since then the institute is best known as a Medical Learning Centre of Excellence and a Specialty Hospital, with the following objectives.
RMC is involved in undertaking various clinical and drug trials in its Clinical Research. The Lab takes on clinical trials for Indian as well as international pharmaceutical companies. It has been a site for several FDA and ERA studies. It has initiated research in areas such as Endocrinology, Orthopaedics, Cardiology and Gastroenterology among others. Ramaiah Clinical Research Centre coordinates all Clinical trials happening in the Institution .The intention is to manage clinical trials under strict regulatory guidelines and uphold the highest standards of professional excellence, integrity, trust and ethics. It has streamlined all Clinical Research activities in the campus under one roof and acted as a one point contact for all CRO and Sponsors who want to conduct trials in the Institution.
Research conducted under strict guidelines has resulted in the College being recognised by several auditory bodies such as EMEA and USFDA. The site has undergone audits by USFDA in 2007 and also by DCGI in 2011 and the Malaysian Regulatory Agency in 2017 completed them successfully without any findings. Many trials have faced Sponsor audits, being the highest or fastest recruiting site and have completed them without any issues. The Institution and the centre offer all CRO’s and Sponsors a large team of qualified Investigators in all therapeutic areas with a wide-ranging knowledge of entire spectrum of drug development and a strong grasp of current regulatory environment in India, a large database of patients, a state of the art 1200 bedded twin hospitals facility and one of them, the Memorial Hospital being NABH accredited providing tertiary, multi-specialty care in the entire spectrum of medicine, Intensive care unit for adult, pediatric and neonatal patients, NABL accredited lab , dialysis unit which runs 24/7, all investigational facilities…in a word all requirements for completing any clinical trial successfully.
The 1400 BEDDED hospital is situated in several buildings. The Main Building contains indoor wards of Surgery, Medicine and Paediatrics. The Eye-ENT complex contains the departments of Ophthalmology and OtoRhinoLaryngology. The Maternity Block is a separate 3-storied building that houses Gynaecology & Obstetrics. Orthopaedics Ward is situated in the ground floor of Woodburn Block. Psychiatry and Physical Medicine are situated in their own buildings. The OPD Block is in the eastern end of campus. The Casualty Complex has two buildings – One in the OPD complex, and the other in the New Emergency Ward in the north-east corner of campus. School of Digestive and Liver Diseases is located at the eastern part of the premises. There are multi super speciality services like Neonatal department with Cath Lab. Neuro Medicine and Genomics department.
For long, IPGME&R remained solely a superspeciality referral hospital and post graduate medical institution. New landmark sections were added over the years, such as Respiratory Care Unit, The Bangur Institute of Neuroscience, The institute of Psychiatry, Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences. A nursing school in school level and a Nursing College for UG and PG level nursing courses were set up. UG Course on Physiotherapy and Para Medical courses were inducted. Later, UG level Medcial Courses were introduced in the academic curriculum. The institute in the present century turned into Multi Superspeciality hospital with induction of advanced neonatal department, Human Milk Bank, Genomics, Neuro Medicines and School of Digestive and Liver Disease.
With more than 15 years of experience ,dr.sujoy ghosh has a great contribution in research field. He has published many book, articles and won several awards at under-graduate, post-graduate and postdoctoral level for academic excellence. Rank holder at all university examinations, stood first in post-graduate, and postdoctoral examinations.
He was also awarded with University scholarships for academic excellence. Several Gold medals at undergraduate, post-graduate and postdoctoral level.
